c.ton

The c.ton radically redefines travel, performance, and practice on the cello without compromising tactile feel or sound production. Playing on the c.ton feels no different than playing on a traditional acoustic cello. But the c.ton folds down to a compact shape, comes with a built-in acoustic and electronic amplification system, and is crafted with the uncompromising eye and touch of a violin luthier. Truly a modern instrument for the modern world.

Portability

Nine years ago we examined the market for portable cellos, and were astounded that no instrument existed which folded up conveniently, ingeniously, and effortlessly. So we went to the drawing board, and have developed a unique cello—the c.ton—which solves the portability conundrum. The c.ton folds down to a mere 36″ x 5″ x 5″ (91.44cm x 12.7cm x 12.7cm), all without losing any critical dimensions of the cello. It has no removable parts—everything folds down, meaning nothing extra needs to be carried around or potentially lost. And it weighs only 6.83lbs (3.1kgs) fitting snugly into a highly portable case.

Feel

In our exploration of the cello market, we also found that all electronic classical instruments had one major flaw—not a single instrument felt like an acoustic cello. The tactile feel was completely off, making the experience of playing on an instrument painful and uninviting. We couldn’t stand by and watch. The c.ton is made from beech, ebony, and spruce woods, with critical supports out of carbon fibre and stainless-steel, while less critical supports out of high-grade plastic for lightness. Playing on the c.ton is nothing less than playing on a full, acoustic cello.

Universality

The c.ton is ideally equipped for music production in any scenario. You may be looking for an instrument that produces little sound and allows you to practice into the wee hours of the night without bothering neighbors. Or maybe you want to electrify your sound and blast it at 11, waking up the whole block! Maybe you just want the convenience of showing up at a gig, unpacking in 20 seconds, and being ready to jam, without envy of the pianist who carries nothing with him. In any scenario, the c.ton fits perfectly into your world.

Modern Yet Authentic

You can’t reinvent the cello and forget about 300+ years of tradition. The c.ton does not claim to ever replace an acoustic cello. It does however lay claim to making an instrument that is ideally adapted to the modern world—a world where convenience, portability, quality, and authenticity are praised characteristics. As violin luthiers, we took all of the acoustic cello’s tradition, and poured it into a labor-of-love for the c.ton, killing ourselves over every last detail. We demanded perfection from our product and we succeeded. We have demonstrated the c.ton to many world-renowned musicians and their commentary pushed us to continue innovating.
